Hard 12 vs Dealer 2: Hit or Stand?
Hit, under every common rule set.
Why hit is right
This is one of the most misplayed hands in blackjack. Players see a 'weak' dealer 2 and stand - but only four cards (10, J, Q, K) bust your 12, while the dealer 2 still makes a hand 65% of the time. The math says take a card. 12 only stands against 4, 5 and 6, where the dealer's bust rate finally justifies waiting.
How the rules change the answer
This one is easy to memorize - the play doesn't change with the table rules.
| Table rules (6 decks) | Correct play |
|---|---|
| S17 · late surrender offered | Hit |
| S17 · no surrender | Hit |
| H17 · late surrender offered | Hit |
| H17 · no surrender | Hit |
🃏 Card counter's note
Counters stand on 12 vs 2 at True Count +3 or higher, when the shoe is loaded with the very tens that would bust you.
Common questions
What is the correct play for hard 12 against a dealer 2?
Hit. In a standard 6-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17 and late surrender is offered, basic strategy says to hit. This play holds under every common rule variation.
Does the dealer hitting soft 17 (H17) change the play for hard 12 vs a dealer 2?
No. Hit is correct whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, and whether or not surrender is offered.
When should card counters play hard 12 vs a dealer 2 differently?
Counters stand on 12 vs 2 at True Count +3 or higher, when the shoe is loaded with the very tens that would bust you.
