The correct play Hit

Hit, under every common rule set.

Why hit is right

The most counterintuitive play in basic strategy: 18 feels like a made hand, but against a 9 the dealer averages a better one. Standing on soft 18 vs 9 loses about 18 cents per dollar; hitting loses only about 10, because the Ace's flexibility means you can't bust and often improve to 19-21 or redraw to a decent total. 18 is not a good hand when the dealer shows 9, 10 or Ace - it's just less bad when you hit.

How the rules change the answer

This one is easy to memorize - the play doesn't change with the table rules.

S17 · late surrender offered Hit
S17 · no surrender Hit
H17 · late surrender offered Hit
H17 · no surrender Hit
